Canada’s largest Newspaper, the Globe & Mail, recently published an opinion article by RightsDD’s CEO, Oliver Cushing. In the article, Oliver reviews the first reports by Canadian Ombudsperson for Responsible Enterprise’s (CORE) following its investigation into alleged association with Uyghur forced labour by Canadian companies.
The CORE is a government mandated body responsible for investigating allegations of human rights violations within Canadian companies' operations and supply chains. It was established in 2019 and its first reports into complaints were published in the summer of 2023.
The reports relate to seven companies accused of having had Ughur forced labourers present in either their supply chain or their own operations. CORE has announced it will conduct full investigations into six of these companies. CORE has asserted that these six companies have, so far, failed to fully cooperate in the investigation process. Oliver examines the potential consequences of failure to fully cooperate and argues that it is a risky strategy for companies to pursue.
